Plot : Yasukuni, a documentary directed by Ying Li, narrates the history of the Yasukuni Shrine in Chiyoda, Tokyo, which enshrines more than 2 million of Japan's dead warriors. The legendary Yasukuni Shrine, where the Japanese officials honor the deceased, has been surrounded by controversy for ages. The ceremonial sword that it holds is believed to harbor the souls of as many as 2.4 million souls. The Japanese assign great power to the sword and the Japanese officers used it to execute untold numbers of Chinese soldiers in the 1930s. The shrine as well as the weapon holds a great personal value for the Japan resident Chinese director, as his own father had suffered the torture inflicted by the Japanese soldiers on Chinese communists. He uses the documentary not only to give the audiences a view of the shrine but also inform them about the violent history that lies behind the existence of the building and the sword even while the Japanese Buddhists assemble at the shrine to honor their dead.
