Plot : ‘Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives’ is a hypnotically paced look at the life of an ailing farmer. Directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the movie takes one on a meditative mind trip through places that blur the boundaries between life, afterlife, myth and dreams. Set in a lushly beautiful northern part of Thailand, the movie unfolds to reveal the story of a farmer who’s on the verge of moving from one world to the next. The story revolves around the said farmer who’s dying because of a kidney failure. While on his death bed, several relatives converge upon him to take care of him during his last moments. Thus begins the journey of Uncle Boonmee into the deepest recesses of his mind, as long forgotten memories come back to haunt his dying brain. He can see the apparition of his dead wife, as well as a bizarre vision of his son in the form of a monkey man. But that’s not all! Uncle Boonmee can also witness the ghosts of his past lives, which include a mind-bending tryst of a princess with a talking cat fish. The mind, in a state of delirium, starts contemplating the true nature of matter, from one life to the next, all connected by a slender thread of what we vaguely term the ‘soul’. This movie is a transcendental experience of an absolutely unprecedented nature that attempts to understand the relationship between man and nature, and several such dichotomies, through which we attempt to understand who or what we are.
