Plot : The Rum Diary presents the saga of a peripatetic journalist, Paul Kemp, completely tired of the craziness, which New Yorkers usually exhibit. His (Journalist) inner commotion mainly derives from the conventions of the late Eisenhower-era of United States, which have been oppressing him with every passing moment. In order to find solace, Paul visits Puerto Rico to contribute as a writer in a local newspaper. While writing for The San Juan Star, he faces challenges at several levels, but before he could carve a niche, he faces the biggest twist of his life. In the meanwhile, he develops feelings for Chenault, Sanderson’s fiancée, a man whose life is completely run over by his property-dealing business. He is the one, who wants to convert the untouched paradise into an industrialist island, by hook or crook. Things change drastically for Paul, when Sanderson hires him to write in his favor. The industrialist wants him to boast about his treacherous schemes in a positive manner, so that he may be able to win in his mission. At this point of time, Paul gets a chance to choose between two different tracks. It is completely up to him, either to go with the fraudulent capitalists, or to support social good. Will he put his self-respect on the stake for the sake of money? Or would he stay with those, who are at the target of anticipated destruction? Well, it is not that easy to save your soul, when you are surrounded by those, who have surrendered themselves in the face of ever-increasing capitalism.
