Plot : The Magician is a comedy drama about a Melbourne assassin, directed by Scott Ryan. The story revolves around hitman Ray Shoesmith (Scott Ryan), who after learning that his next-door neighbor is a film student, hires him to make a documentary on his life, which is to be released only in case of Ray’s early death. Rather than focusing on the violence in Ray’s life, the documentary delves deep in his conversations, the banalities and strength of human contact and fanatical interests. It reveals what motivates Ray and also gives an insight into his brutal skill. The film uses the character of a likeable killer and through his peculiarly moral examples, hit at a wide range of issues including from the legalization of drugs to the prevalence of homosexuals in Hollywood. The film’s narrative is entirely fictional which is shot in the form of a documentary.
