Plot : The Extra Man is a comedy film, adapted from a novel written by Jonathan Ames. It’s a gripping film, with its plot centering on the life of an unsuccessful playwright named Henry Harrison. Harrison escorts the rich and elderly widows of New York to the miscellaneous events, happening in Manhattan and Palm Beach. For this purpose, he resides in a grimy Upper East Side apartment, which is in the vicinity of the class, to whom he offers his services. Now, to share the rent of his apartment, he locates a room partner named Louis Ives, who has just walked out from a job at a New Jersey prep school, and aspires to become a successful writer. After shifting into Henry’s cramped apartment, he takes up a job at an environmental magazine, where he happens to meet the attractive Mary Powell, and soon develops a sort of crush on her. To top it all, there is a jealous and weird neighbor named Gershon, who keeps doing all the wrong and strange things! Eventually, the plot of this film takes an interesting turn, when Henry starts teaching Louis the technique of becoming a well-attired, well-behaved escort i.e. an “extra man” at the parties of the fancy older women. These women, most of them widows, often stuck to their gay climber party companions, in order to get satisfaction and amusement, in their so-called monotonous lives. To watch this luscious tale of flamboyant and colorful characters, peppered with some sophisticated comedy, you ought to get your hands on The Extra Man.
