Plot : A typical Godardian movie, Socialism is intended to be a magisterial statement on the decline of European civilization, through the medium of three parallel and lucidly flowing stories, set in the most contrasting environs. The first segment of the movie spies on a conversation going on the deck of a cruise ship in the middle of the Mediterranean, between a weathered war criminal, a former United Nations official and a Russian investigator. These suave looking men and women with their manicured hands and impeccable clothing are murmuring over their experiences and philosophies. The Godardian style of editing with jarring sequences, haphazard sounds where one can hear the distant screams and the billowing winds, combines all these with the most digital filmography one can ever hope to see. The movie proceeds to the second movement, ‘Our Europe’ – captures the dilemmas faced by the young ones in the European society. In this one, a gas station owner is summoned by his rebellious kids and put to trial by the young rebels. An at length discussion over the fate awaiting the seemingly colloquial values of liberty, equality and fraternity in the modern times follows, and then we’re off to different locales in Egypt, Palestine, Naples and Cataluña for the final movement – ‘Our Humanities’. A motion picture masterpiece is waiting for us; watch Socialism online to enjoy it.
