Plot : Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll propelled a polio victim into the excesses of the Punk rock scene in the 1970s. The madman of British punk, Ian Dury’s brilliantly psychotic genius is superbly handled and perfectly executed by Andy Serkis on-screen. Serkis nails that Gollum-esque evil, mixed with the musical and lyrical genius, that was Ian Dury. Mat Whitecross’s movie is a far cry from the typical British biopics, where overtly analyzed British music icons were portrayed as too drab for modern cinema. Here Whitecross manages to relive Dury’s rise from a polio affected child, to the top echelons of the punk rock scene. With his infectious vocals and often controversial lyrics, Dury enchanted an entire generation. Whether you’re an Ian Dury and the Blockheads fan or not, whether you’re a punk rock fan or not; this is one movie that you will want to witness! You will enjoy this highly discontinuous, chopped-up montage of the life and times of the mercurial Ian Dury. Serkis brilliantly follows through Dury’s growing age, his constant battle with polio, and his often absent father. Then we see Dury’s Kilburn and the Highroad, his first band; and his subsequent formation of the Ian Dury and the Blockheads band. We get to witness their crazy on-stage antics, combined with Dury’s eccentricity and lyrical brilliance. As the movie progresses, we get to look at Dury’s relationship with his tolerant wife Betty (Olivia Williams) and young girlfriend, Denise (Naomie Harris). This is an energetic and vivacious film, which will appeal to fans of punk rock worldwide and will perhaps rank as one of the best biopics, ever made.
