Plot : Secret Sunshine is a heart-rending rendition of human emotions and survival, in the face of tragedy and loss by a supremely talented actor, Jeon Do-yeon. The movie won Ms. Jeon the best actress award at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. Secret Sunshine is a South Korean movie, directed by acclaimed South Korean director, novelist and former Minister of Culture, Lee Chang-dong. The title is the literal translation of the Korean title of the movie, ‘Milyang’. Milyang or Miryang is the name of the city, where the story is based. Sin-ae moves to Miryang after her husband’s death, as it was the place where her late husband grew up. As she tries to settle down in the new place, she stoically faces the peculiar behavior of the townsfolk. Tragedy strikes a second time, delivering a cruel blow to Sin-ae and makes her face a fierce test of endurance and show the resilience of her spirit. The movie focuses on and brings out, the various stages of emotional upheavals a human being goes through, when fates it all away. The movie, instead of digressing onto the usual path of the sequence and unraveling of the tragedy, focuses on the stages of intense emotions felt by the sufferer. Denial, rage, madness, faith for solace and then turning away from it all, on not finding true peace – all these are depicted in an intense performance by Jeon Do-yeon and fantastic direction by Lee Chang-dong.
