Plot : ‘Old cats’ is the story of a strained relationship between a mother and her daughter. It talks about the perplexities and misunderstandings in a not-so-perfect family, based in Chile. The movie begins with incidents that portray the mother Isadora’s complicated state of dementia, associated with aging. She frequently has memory loss attacks where she finds herself staring into blank space, unable to recall who she is and what she is doing. She even floods the bathroom when she forgets to close the water tap. In other words, Isadora is slowly losing her mind. The story takes an interesting turn when Isadora’s hysterical daughter Rosario barges into her apartment one day and brings papers of a power of attorney in her name. She compels her mother to sign them, so that she can sell the apartment and fund her business venture. Isadora is firm on her decision to not sign any documents. She hence tries her best to pretend that she is totally in her senses and not amnesic. Rosario also brings her lesbian girlfriend Hugo along with her, who is more sensible and sane as compared to Rosario. Isadora is always sarcastic about their relationship. Initially, Rosario comes across as the villain in her mother’s life, but as the movie progresses, we realize that the cold vibes in this mother-daughter relation are not solely Rosario’s fault. Isadora had always been the biased, under-affectionate and unattached mother. However, as the drama unfolds, viewers get to witness some delightful sparks of compassion between Isadora and Rosario.
