Plot : Directed by Bruce Beresford, Mao’s Last Dancer is an adaptation of Li Cunxin’s autobiography of the same name. It is an Australian film, made on a rural Chinese boy, who shot to fame in the United States, for his skills in ballet. The movie takes us back to the late 1970s, where Li succeeds in getting admission in the Beijing Dance Academy to pursue a career in ballet. When Ben Stevenson, an American ballet director notices Li on his visit to China, he offers him to visit the US and stay there for 3 months, and learn ballet at the Houston Ballet School. He wins an instant fan following and also falls in love with Elizabeth Mackay, an American ballet dancer. It makes him develop a very strong inclination towards living in the US for more time; however, the Chinese government doesn’t allow him to do. He marries Elizabeth and after much struggle, ends up with an approval to his wish of living in America, on the condition that he will not be allowed to go back to China ever again. Divorced from his wife, Li falls for Mary McKendry and the couple gets to visit China, three years after Li’s parents’ visit to the US. Li and his wife perform in Li’s hometown to win widespread appreciation. The incredible movie, which has won numerous awards, such as the AFI, is available as a downloadable file, in DVD, Divx and IPod formats.
