Plot : Director Toddy Solondz, after the 1998 flick, ‘Happiness’, gives us another offering of the same kind – a sequel of sorts to ‘Happiness’ – Life During Wartime. The movie is loosely based on the 1998 movie, where new actors are playing the old characters. According to its creators, the movie is one, in which “Friends, family, and lovers struggle to find love, forgiveness, and meaning in a war-torn world riddled with comedy and pathos”. The three sisters who appeared in ‘Happiness’ - Trish, Joy and Helen (played by Allison Janney, Shirley Henderson and Ally Sheedy respectively); are the people this movie revolves around. Soon to be re-married to Harvey (Michael Lerner), Trish’s happiness cannot be defined in words. Once separated from Bill (Ciaran Hinds), Trish hopes that her would-be husband is “normal”. The lack of a normal father-figure in her kids’ life, is something that had left Trish saddened and disheartened for a long time. Bill, incarcerated for child molestation, is finally released from prison and he returns to his family, thereby placing Trish and her sons in a quandary. The family needs to resolve their dilemma of whether to forgive the paedophile father or move on with a new life. Trish’s sister Joy, on the other hand, has to undertake the difficult task of facing her dark past. The haunting images of her lover’s past don’t seem to leave her alone even for a moment. No matter wherever she goes, her troubled and shameful past is never behind her.
