Plot : Kings of Pastry is a very unique documentary movie, which focuses on a 3-day pastry making competition in France. The filmmaker takes the founder of a Chicago-based school named ‘The French Pastry School’, Jacquy Pfeiffer, as the main subject of the documentary. Jacquy Pfeiffer’s return to his country places him in front of the 15 well-known pastry chefs of France. It’s an inspiring tale of how a chef tries hard to prove his mettle, one more time. The documentary is full of some real-time drama as the chefs jostle around to serve the best pastry within the stipulated time. The obsession of all the leading chefs gets tested in the country’s biggest pastry making competition. The passion to come out victorious, the increasing pressure of mixing the right ingredients, and the skills to present the dish in the right tone and texture, all get featured in this incredible documentary. One of the biggest surprises of the documentary is the presence of French president Nicolas Sarkozy to declare the ultimate winner of the adrenaline-pumping competition. This documentary is a perfect example of how an inconsequential subject matter could be treated in an exquisite manner to bring out a masterpiece. The title of the documentary has a special significance, and summarizes the essence of the greatest pastry competition of France. It gets justified once the competition kicks off with all 16 stalwarts of the pastry world. Undoubtedly, the filmmaker has figured out a good strategy of bringing out the qualities of French chefs through the medium of a well-told story.
