Plot : Another prodigy, another shockingly remarkable life and the untimely death of another diamond- this artist, whose work sells at sky-high prices today, had a life characterised by a meteoric rise and fall. Director and close friend Tamra Davis’ endeavour to capture the life of this genius resulted in Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child. Jean-Michel Basquiat, though acclaimed by critics and the commercial world, had to face severe racial discrimination from his peers. His career began with graffiti art when he painted the face of the 1970s New York City with the hues of “SAMO” – the pseudonym that he used. Davis’ documentary showcases an interview of Basquiat that the director took when they met in 1985. Apart from Basquiat’s, there are many other interviews that the documentary shows – of people who were close to the painter. Basquiat’s first art on canvas came in 1981, and within the next two years, he succeeded in achieving a cult following. This charismatic young enigma is still unexplored. Davis’ documentary attempts, through interviews of people like Larry Gagosian, Tony Shafrazi, Annina Nosei and others, to unravel some parts of the mystery that Basquiat’s life was. At the age of twenty five, he was at the zenith of his career. His paintings fetched him more than a million dollars apiece. Then, like a bolt from the blue, the world received the news of his death. His heroin addiction was successful in consuming his life – at the young age of twenty seven.
