Plot : Adapted from Wajdi Mouawad's theatre play, Incendies is a story of two twins trying to fulfill their deceased mother’s last wish. Nominated at the Oscars in the best foreign language film category, the film offers a gripping mystery as well as some deep emotional sentiments to viewers. The story begins when Jeane and Simon, the twins of Arab-Canadian origin, get to receive unusual revelations about their mother’s past when her will is read out to them by her notary Lebel. She wanted them to deliver two envelopes; one to their father, whom they wrongly believed had passed away; and another to their brother, a sibling they never knew about till now. Although Simon shows some apprehension initially and thinks that his mother probably lost her mind before she died, he cannot resist following his sister Jeane as she sets out to untangle their mother’s past. As these two youngsters step out into the war-stricken and hatred-heaped Middle East, they unveil a lot of secrets about their courageous mother. They are not welcomed by everyone who knew their mother and advised to return without probing any further into their family’s secrets. Undeterred by these dejections, the twins find out that their mother was once imprisoned in a Christian military jail and had an affair with a Muslim warlord. This and many more shocking mysteries unfold as the story moves from frame to frame. The backdrop of the war-torn and politics-smacked Middle East is very intriguing. Being a family drama with an investigative approach, Incendies has a lasting impact!
