Plot : Mia Hanson-Love’s movie, The Father of My Children, explores the great ennui of life that people are completely swallowed by. Revolving around the nicely-entwined themes of depression and suicide, the movie is a portrayal of the life of the troubled film producer Humbert Balsan. Balsan, burdened by his professional life and the growing distance between his personal and professional lives, ended up taking his life in 2005. The Father of My children portrays, in an outstanding and undemonstrative manner, the life of film producer Gregoire Canvel, who is modelled on Humbert Balsan. Canvel (played by Louis-Do de Lencquesaing) is a person who seems to possess everything that a successful and luxury-filled life requires. He is a film producer with a lovely family and a life that anybody can be envious of. Yet, as his company dwindles down the spiral of financial loss and debt, Canvel’s tolerance reaches a saturation point and despair engulfs him completely. His tight-rope walk between the two aspects of his life – professional and domestic, leaves him at the threshold of his self-control and he ends up taking the final decision of suicide. What follows is the way his wife and daughters deal with their emotional trauma. His wife and daughter are at loggerheads with each other regarding the fate of Canvel’s company – when his wife wants it to operate; his daughter wants to annihilate the reason of the destruction of her family. The struggle of Canvel’s family makes this movie a must-watch piece of entertainment.
