Plot :
Departures, a musical drama, directed by Yôjirô Takita, is about a cellist, who after losing his job, goes into the profession of preparing the dead for funeral. Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki), who is a devoted cellist, finds himself jobless, after the orchestra in which he worked, is dissolved. Daigo then decides to return to his hometown with his wife, to start life anew. He comes across a classified ad of "Departures", and applies for the job believing that the classified has been put up by a travel agency. But he soon learns that he has been wrong when he discovers that the job is in fact for a funeral professional who prepares the dead bodies for burial and their entry into the next life. He takes up the job even though his wife and others look down upon this job. Daigo new job makes him experience the thoughtful as well as the comical aspects of death and he realizes the wonder, joy and meaning of life and living.
