Plot : A period drama based on the life and romance of the famous English poet, John Keats, three years before his death. It stars Ben Whishaw as John Keats and Abbie Cornish as Fanny Brawne, the young lady Keats falls in love with. The film's title is taken from a sonnet by Keats named "Bright star, would I were stedfast as thou art", which he is said to have been written for Fanny. Keats is introduced to Fanny, in 1818 in Hampstead village, through the Dilke family. The Dilkes were neighbors of Charles Brown, Keats’ friend and poet. Charles does not rate Fanny highly and considers her pretentious and shallow. However, Fanny is a fashionable eighteen year old, who flirts with a detached Keats. Eventually, he agrees to teach her poetry and that begins a relationship between them in a sublime way. Brown tries his best to keep the couple apart, and even Fanny tries to walk out of Keats life, but circumstances bring them close again and this time, they fall deeply in love. Fanny’s widowed mother is not keen on this relationship, as his means of income are not too good. Later, Keats contracts the same illness as his brother, and is at one point taken in by the Brawne family. Fanny’s mother gives her approval to the couple, when Keats published works start selling well. But sickness takes him to Italy, from where he writes lovelorn letters to the heartbroken Fanny. Keats dies in Italy, leaving a mournful Fanny grieving and forever clutching his letters and the poem ‘Bright Star’ that he wrote for her.
