Plot : American Swing is a documentary film directed by Jon Hart and Matthew Kaufman and chronicles the rise and fall of Plato's Retreat, a sex-club in New York City that operated during the 1970s. In 1977, Larry Levenson came up with the idea of opening up a nightclub where people could have sex freely, without feeling ashamed or being threatened with any legal consequences. A seemingly average family man, Larry realized his dream with the help of his girlfriend Mary and some shady investors as well as a series of steamy public access commercials. Thus was born Plato's Retreat, an extravagant, heterosexual sex club where couples could come to dance, swing and swap. Numerous attempts to close the club legally failed and its business prospered until it was finally closed on New Year’s Eve in 1985, due to growing AIDS crisis.
