Plot : American writer and novelist Paul Auster was just 14 years old, when he saw his friend get struck by a flash of lightning and dying on the spot. He had been lucky to be just inches away from the point, where lightning had struck. But this incident continued to pester him throughout his life. Auster now takes us through the experience of people, who have survived lightning strikes, through Jennifer Baichwal’s documentary, Act of God. The documentary interviews seven people, including author Dannion Brinkley and dramatist James O’Reilly. It attempts to answer the one question that has been haunting the victims of lightning striking incidents, since time immemorial – was the incident a random natural phenomenon or did it have some cosmic reasons? The debate is endless! Dramatist O’Reilly has written a play by the name Act of God, in which he conveys his dilemma of neither being able to accept that the striking hit him for a reason, nor being able to believe that there was no reason behind it! It is interesting to watch both sides of the coin on this issue, as the documentary investigates both scientific opinions (like that of a French storm chaser) and religious beliefs (such as the lightning worshipping Yoruba community in Rwanda, the world’s lightning capital). Watch Act of God online to witness how life changes in every way, physically and emotionally, when you are the one in every 700,000 people who get electrocuted by lightning!
