Plot : The Vanished Empire is a drama flick directed by Karen Shakhnazarov that is set in 1970’s and shows how both love and youthful idealism are put under strain as the Soviet Union starts to disintegrate. Sergei (Alexander Lyapin) a dissident Russian college student openly expresses his desire to help bring democracy to the Soviet Union. His confidence and his forthrightness lead the women on campus to admire him. This annoys his close friend Stepan (Egor Baranovsky), who has the same political views without the same social skills. Despite being in love with one of the most beautiful girls at the university, Lyuda (Lidia Milyuzina), Sergei fails to appreciate her uniqueness. Stepan also loves Lyuda deeply, but only from a distance and at a time when Sergei's stubborn nature and alcoholism threaten to endanger his opportunities. With the three youngsters entering adulthood, the Soviet Union is in a state of unrest and is headed towards a future that is entirely different from anything that people have imagined.
