Plot : The Stoning of Soraya M. is a crime drama directed by Cyrus Nowrasteh, based about the menace of religious fundamentalism, gender apartheid, and mob rule. Set in Iran in 1986, the story revolves around Freidoune Sahebjam (Jim Caviezel), whose car breaks down while traveling though a remote village. He is then approached by Zahra (Shohreh Aghdashloo), who narrates to him the tale of her niece Soraya (Mozhan Marnò). Soraya’s arranged marriage to an abusive tyrant, Ali (Navid Negahban), turned into a nightmare and she along with her children bore untold atrocities under the hands of Ali. However, when he wanted to get a divorce from her, in order to marry a teenage girl, Soraya refused. Ali then schemed to get rid of her and accused Soraya of adultery, knowing very well that the only punishment for the same under the Islamic law, was death. To prove his wife’s crime, he even blackmailed several male villagers, who testified against Soraya leading to her death by stoning.
