Plot : Life Is Hot In Cracktown is a drama, directed by Buddy Giovinazzo, based on the director’s novel of the same name. Marybeth (Kerry Washington) is a pre-op transsexual and works as a prostitute to raise the amount required for a final operation to make her transformation complete so that she can marry her lover Benny, a small time burglar. Concetta (Shannyn Sossamon), his wife, looks after their ailing infant son while her husband Manny (Victor Rasuk) works at night at a 24-hour bodega visited by junkies, drug dealers and prostitutes, besides working as a security guard at a welfare hotel during the day. Living in the hotel, is a ten-year-old boy Willy, along with his sister Susie, mother (Illeana Douglas) and her obnoxious boyfriend. To get money for fast food, Willy starts begging on the streets which are roamed by the dangerous gangster Romeo (Evan Ross), who is looking for his younger brother’s killer and threatens anyone who crosses his path.
