Plot : Directed by Megumi Sasaki, Herb and Dorothy is a documentary about two people who have redefined the meaning of being an art collector. Herbert Vogel, a postal clerk and Dorothy Vogel, a librarian, with the help of some very ordinary means were successful in putting up one of the most significant modern art collections in history. The two quietly started acquiring the works of unknown artists as far back as the early 1960s, when Minimalist and Conceptual Art was least appreciated. The couple used Herb’s entire salary to buy the art work that appealed to them and lived only on the salary earned by Dorothy. Their two fixed rules for collecting artworks were that the artwork had to be reasonably priced and that it had to be small enough to be kept in their one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan. Despite being bound by these rules, the two turned out to be curatorial futurist, as nearly all the people they had encouraged and befriended became world famous artists.
