Plot : Based on the true story of Frank Lucas (played by Denzel Washington), the New Jersey based drug-lord of the 1960-70s, the film starts with Frank, taking over the leadership of his gang, after the demise of his boss and mentor, Bumpy Johnson. Frank gets into the business of sourcing heroin, directly from the east, after learning of their superior quality. He finds a unique way of shipping it into the US in the military aircrafts coming in from Vietnam, and then selling a highly diluted version of the same called ‘Blue Magic’ on the city streets. Frank makes a fortune and buys several nightclubs and apartments. Meanwhile, a Newark Police Department detective Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) is assigned the task of finding and going after the actual supplier of drugs and drug trafficking in Essex County, New Jersey. Roberts has been through a difficult patch in personal as well as professional life. A failed marriage and an honest deed of turning in a large haul of cash discovered in a car, makes him an outcast amongst his own. The cost of his zealous honesty is borne by his partner, who later on, overdoses on ‘Blue Magic’. Roberts finds his break in the new assignment and constitutes a team of hand-picked honest officers of the police department. The hunt and tracking of the unknown face behind the drug trafficking begins. Frank is caught and confronted with the evidence that has been gathered against him. He turns approver and discloses the names of all those who were involved in the business. Almost three quarters of the NYC’s Drug Enforcement Agency is arrested and convicted.
