Plot : Afghan Star is a documentary directed by Havana Marking, about a musical contest show similar to American Idol, named Afghan Star which is aired in Afghanistan. As a nation that has been ravaged by the Taliban militants and where free democracy and pop music are both somewhat extraordinary ideas, four contestants risk their lives to participate in a musical competition. The country, which has followed a repressive culture for years, was taken by storm when the talent search show, Afghan Star started airing. Even though music is still regarded sinful by the Islamic militants, according to an estimate nearly one third of the nation not only watches the show regularly but also votes for its favorite contestants. The documentary takes a look at the show as well as its impact on the Afghan society. It also tells about the risks faced by the contestants who have shown the courage to defy not only the Islamic radicals but broken the shackles of tradition to pursue their dreams.
