Plot : Marking the feature film debut of director Tze Chun, Children of Invention is a heartwarming tale of two Japanese children, who fight against all odds and single-handedly build a life of their own in a foreign land. Set in Boston, the movie takes us into the lives of the Cheng family – a mother, Elaine, and her two children, Raymond and Tina, who are struggling to make both ends meet in a land, where they do not belong. Elaine does all that’s in her might to provide a comfortable life to her children. She juggles odd jobs, and in a bid to make some easy money, gets entangled in a doubtful pyramid scheme. One fateful night, when she doesn’t return home, Raymond and Tina are left all alone in a home that’s not theirs and in a city where they are illegal immigrants. With no one being aware that they are alone at home, they spend the night confused, hungry, and worried about their mother. As the days pass with no sign of Elaine’s return, little Raymond takes the onus of earning a livelihood upon his shoulders. He converts his favorite playtime activity of inventing things into a profession, and vows to protect his little sister. The movie, which has won a whopping 17 festival awards, brings together a gripping plot and some of the most convincing and original portrayals, in a package that tugs at one’s heartstrings. The movie is a story of the power of the human mind to sustain life in the most unfavorable circumstances. As you watch Children of Invention online, you’ll find yourself marveling at the little boy’s resilience and his younger sister’s faith in him, and in life. The question that the movie leaves one asking is ‘if they can do it, then why not me?’
